State Trading Organization (STO) has announced that it will sell onions at a reduced price of MVR 16 per kg for Ramadan.
A 25 kg sack of onions will be available for MVR 350, with a further discount to MVR 340 per sack for bulk purchases exceeding 10 sacks. These prices are now applicable at all STO stores, significantly lower than the current market rate of MVR 25 to MVR 30 per kg.
STO stated that onions were brought in early to stabilize prices, as they are in high demand during Ramadan. In addition to onions, STO has also introduced stocks of coconuts and lemons to the market, with coconuts priced at MVR 5 each.
This year, unlike previous years, STO will bring 24 essential items to the market for Ramadan and sell them at controlled prices to ease the financial burden on consumers.
Items imported at special prices for Ramadan:
1. Staple foods: onion, eggs, potatoes, coconut, dates
2. Vegetables and Fruits: garlic, ginger, lime, carrot, orange, cabbage, chilli, pears, watermelon, mangoes, passion fruit, cucumber
3. Processed Food : nestle cream, cocoa powder, baked beans, condensed milk
4. Cooking Ingredients: sunflower oil, vegetable Oil, basmati rice
