Minister of Foreign Affairs Moosa Zameer has claimed that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has shown the citizens, and the entire world, that Maldives is capable of maintaining its own independence.

Speaking at a meeting with residents held at Thaa Atoll Madifushi on Tuesday, Zameer said that in the days ahead of last year's presidential election, when the President had been engaged in his campaign activities, the country's independence had been under serious threat.

Zameer said that the President had assumed office with the intention to protect the freedom and independence of the country, adding that he is currently fulfilling this pledge.

Referring to the plans of strengthening the military to better protect the country's Exclusive Economic Zone that the President had shared during his first presidential address, the Foreign Minister intimated that this particular idea is one no previous leader has thought of.

"President Dr Muizzu has shown the people, and the world, that Maldives is a country capable of maintaining its own independence."

"We have always been made think that we are a people forever dependent on someone else. But this has changed with the President's foresight. I have noticed that he has been able to achieve this even within these two months he has been in office," Zameer said.

Zameer expressed his belief that Maldives' diplomatic relations are presently at a level never before achieved, owing to the President's wisdom and foresight. He claims that in this short period in office, the President has achieved more than the collective efforts of State diplomats and the President's Office since 2016.
