Nilandhoo Council President Ibrahim Nasih said the vessel was refloated by another ship of the company at around 06:00 hrs today.
The fuel barge which ran aground the Gaafu Alifu atoll Nilandhoo reef Sunday morning has been refloated.
Nilandhoo Council President Ibrahim Nasih said the vessel was refloated by another ship of the company at around 06:00 hrs today.
However, when the council inspected the area, the reef was observed to be severely damaged, he said.
"The reef had sustained most of the damage. A lot of it was cut up and destroyed. But there was no traces of fuel," Nasih said.
Nasih said he is in discussions with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on the measures to be taken.
EPA imposes large fines in cases of reef damage.
