Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has leased land plots located near the "Fithuroanu" (Casuarina) trees in Hulhumale' for commercial use, and work has already begun on some of these plots.
This decision was made when the land use plan of Hulhumale' Phase 1 was changed during the previous administration.
As part of the development, some of the Casuarina trees have been cut down.
These land plots, located in front of luxury apartments near MerryBrown and Coffee Republic restaurants, are popular with the public for photo shoots due to the picturesque setting created by the trees. According to the Hulhumale' Land Use Plan, available on HDC’s website, indicates that 20 plots will be designated for waterfront commercial use, following the removal of the trees.
HDC has already leased some of the plots to companies, and contracts have been signed.
However, HDC has not yet responded on the matter.
HDC has previously also removed some trees due to their damage to roads and utility ducts, which raised public concern over the matter.
