The High Court ruled yesterday that the police had lied in the case involving a speeding car that lost control and crashed in Hulhumale'.

Last July, a speeding car near Vinares Flat collided with a bystander waiting on a parked motorcycle, causing him serious injuries.

Ibrahim Ikram, the driver of the car, was released by the High Court yesterday after he appealed against a lower court order placing him in judicial custody pending trial. The High Court's decision came after it was revealed that the lower court had failed to provide him with a lawyer.

Police told High Court that during the remand hearing, the lower court judge had asked the police whether Ikram had a lawyer. However, recordings of the hearing showed that the judge made no such inquiry, revealing that the police had provided false information.

"The information given by the Maldives Police Service during the High Court hearing is untrue, and this matter should be investigated by the relevant authorities," the three judges panel coincided.

The case was heard by a High Court bench consisting of Justices Mohamed Faisal, Hassan Shafeeu, and Abdul Maniu Hussain, with Justice Faisal presiding.
