Lawyer Nazim Sattar, who was sentenced to house arrest for sexual misconduct with the Bangladeshi national, MD Alamgir, has been released after serving his sentence.

The prosecution has charged several Maldivians with homosexuality in connection with the Alamgir case.

Nazim, who pleaded guilty in the Criminal Court, was sentenced to three months and 26 days in prison on September 15.

Nazim's sentence expired today, on which the Maldives Correctional Service handed him the official letter stating his release.

In an earlier statement on the case, Nazim said he had repented of his crime and made a public apology. He pleaded guilty to the crime after being blackmailed and extorted for money, the statement said.

Alamgir was previously charged with three counts of homosexuality and 40 counts of making pornographic material. The Criminal Court sentenced him to seven months in jail for homosexuality and three years and nine months for the production of pornography.

The Criminal Court had earlier sentenced a policeman to one year in jail and a Customs employee to three months' in prison and seven months' under house arrest.

Former Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) leader Mohamed Nasheed (Colonel Nasheed) has also been charged in the case. The trial is still ongoing after he denied the charges. The case of others besides him is also pending in court.

Although many people have been charged with homosexuality, the case of those who blackmailed these individuals has been filed due to lack of evidence. The three men arrested in the case have also been released.
