The parliament on Wednesday approved to remove Mohamed Zahid from his position as the vice president of the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM).
The decision was approved with the votes of 61 lawmakers in favour of Zahid's termination.
Appointed to the commission by convicted former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom on June 15, 2017, Zahid had two additional years on his term before his dismissal on Wednesday.
In a motion filed during May, the parliamentary Committee on Human Rights and Gender concluded that HRCM had failed to carry out their mandate and protect the rights of Maldivians.
Amid the committee's preparations to dismiss HRCM's members nearing the end of their five-year terms, the rights watchdog's President Aminath Eenas and members Aishath Afreen and Moosa Ali Kaleyfaan handed in their resignations this month.
With these developments, only member Naiween Abdulla remains on the commission.
The President's Office recently opened opportunities for interested individuals to apply for positions on the commission.
