Elections Commission on Sunday authorised lawyer Abdulla Haseen to register his newly proposed political party, 'Maldives Labour and Social Democratic Party'.

Haseen had originally sought to name his party 'Maldives Labour and Social Justice Party' (Labour Party). However the EC had denied the requested name for undisclosed names, and ordered him to implore a better suited name for the party.

The lawyer had earlier stated that, if granted permission, he would pursue the required 3,000 signatures for party registration, and make the party official before the upcoming Presidential Election on September 23.

Haseen is one of the lawyers that represented Hussain Humaam, who was infamously sentenced to death in connection to the murder of former Ungoofaru MP Dr. Afraasheem Ali. An active former participant at multiple rallies of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Haseen has insisted that his decision to leave MDP was not based on any crossfires between him and the party.

The registration of any political party requires a minimum of 3,000 willing signatures. In addition, the allocated government grant will only be received upon the registration of at least 10,000 members to any particular party.

Currently, there are six registered parties in the Maldives: the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), the main opposition MDP, Jumhooree Party, religiously conservative Adhaalath Party, Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) and ruling coalition partner Maldives Development Alliance (MDA).
