The state has entered into a settlement agreement with the bereaved parents of a baby who passed away due to government hospital Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH)'s negligence, issuing an undisclosed amount as compensation.

The case was initially filed with the Civil Court last year, where IGMH admitted that the baby's death was a result of their negligence, and a request was made to compensate the parents for their loss.

However, the court decided this week that both parties have entered an out of court settlement. As a result, the lawsuit has been dropped, and the case is now closed.

Speaking on the matter, an official from the Attorney General's Office said that the family sued to seek compensation following the death of their child and that the state believed it best to enter an out of court settlement to save time and given that a child has died.

They also detailed that the settlement issued was lower than what the family had claimed, and had not provided further details besides confirming that the value was less than MVR five million.

The Attorney General's Office said that the agreement signed between both parties has a non-disclosure clause requested for by the parents, preventing the settlement amount from being made public.
