Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) announced Tuesday that the land reclamation component of the 'Land Reclamation & Shore Protection project' for Maafushi, Kaafu Atoll, was completed on June 14.

Under the project, MTCC reclaimed 25 hectares of the lagoon of Maafushi, for the development of an artificial island which will be connected to Maafushi via a causeway.

The company noted that the first rock boulder barge needed to commence the shore protection component is scheduled to arrive on June 25. MTCC previously disclosed that a total of 1,110 meters of revetment will be installed.

The development of a separate island aims to provide more beach areas for Maafushi, which is renowned as a pinnacle of local tourism in Maldives. The project will further meet the high demand for residential plots on Maafushi, with plots to be leased for commercial purposes as well from the reclaimed area.

Awarded to MTCC on August 27, 2019, the 'K. Maafushi Land Reclamation & Shore Protection project' marked the first reclamation project commenced under incumbent President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's government, as an electoral pledge to the people of Maafushi. The project cost is estimated at MVR 99.98 million.
