Maldives' democracy is at risk of backsliding, opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail said today.
Marking International Day of Democracy, Fayyaz said in a post on social media platform X that the country's progress is the result of a decades-long struggle, but the work is ongoing, and the commitment to democratic values must be reaffirmed.
"Once again, we are at the crossroads of democratic backsliding. A harsh reminder that the freedoms we have achieved must be fiercely protected, or they risk being taken away by autocrats," he said.
Fayyaz added that there is no reason to lose hope as the Maldivian ideal of a fair and just society remains strong.
