In a post on social today, the President said that one of the biggest challenges faced by State institutions that work against drug addiction are issues in the existing Drugs Act.
To resolve this, the Act is now being reviewed, he said, after which amendments will be proposed to parliament within the week.
In addition to this, a new bill for eradication of gang related crimes to replace the existing Gang Related Crimes Act is to be submitted in the next two weeks.
He extended thanks for the continued support towards efforts to find resolutions for long standing issues such as this.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology has earlier drafted a bill proposing to identify gang leaders and members and to dismiss them from government jobs, as well as prevent them from contesting in elections.
That bill determines who gang leaders and its members are, and also details the characteristics of gangs. It also calls for the amendment of the law to allow death sentence to be passed on persons who bring in more than a determined amount of illicit drugs.
