Urbanco said that the traffic lights currently being installed in Hulhumalé will significantly reduce the number of accidents in the future.

The purpose of this installation is to address the issue of speeding vehicles and facilitating safe pedestrian crossings. These traffic lights play an important role in ensuring the safety of pedestrians and preventing accidents.

In other countries, similar traffic lights are installed to cater to the needs of the elderly and individuals with special needs.

Benefits of traffic lights include;

- Safety

Studies show that pedestrian crossings with little or no installed traffic lighting increase the risk of accidents. However, if such traffic lights are installed, the likelihood of accidents are significantly reduced.

- Visibility

The primary objective of installing traffic lights is to enhance visibility for both pedestrians and drivers, which is crucial for road safety. Improved visibility enables both pedestrians and drivers to identify potential hazards in advance and take necessary precautions to avoid collisions.

"With the increasing number of vehicles in Maldives, the government and various institutions are taking important road safety measures. The use of technologies like traffic lights will bring many benefits, reducing accidents and creating a safe environment," Urbanco said.

Urbanco plans to address the increasing number of accidents in Hulhumalé by installing traffic lights at eight locations. In addition to the installation of traffic lights, dividers will be placed in the center of major roads. As a part of this initiative, testing of the newly installed traffic lights is currently underway in front of Hulhumalé Hospital and in Hiyaa Flat area located in Hulhumalé 2.
