President Solih urges against welcome ceremonies for state officials

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, on Wednesday, urged against conducting elaborate welcome ceremonies for top state officials travelling out of the capital city of Male', particularly if such functions involve children.

In a tweet, Spokesperson for the President and Chief Communications Strategist at President's Office Ibrahim Hood asserted that the government did not endorse the participation of school students in welcome ceremonies for state officials.

Hood went on to convey President Solih's instruction for all ministries and state institutions to refrain from involving school pupils in such events.

The aforementioned directive was publicised after the Island Council of Laamu Gan called for the participation of as many students as possible in an event that the president is scheduled to attend on Thursday.

A ceremony is planned to mark the inauguration of the Gan Zone Stadium, the introduction of scanning services at Gan Regional Hospital and the establishment of a unified electrical system on the island.

After several students joined the inauguration of the Hoarafushi Airport in Haa Alif Atoll on November 19, the Ministry of Education clarified that the children were not officially representing their schools. However, the ministry called on parents to adhere to the guidelines set by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) to control the spread of COVID-19, if they permit children to attend any ceremonies or functions held at their respective islands.

Citing negative impacts such as the health consequences of prolonged standing, the education ministry also urged against the involvement of school children in welcome ceremonies for state officials in a circular issued on December 3, 2018,
