State Trading Organisation (STO) has announced plans to develop a port to handle construction aggregate in Kaafu Atoll's Gulhifalhu.
According to a senior official of the state-run company, the project includes development of a wharf to unload aggregate, and a warehouse.
"This is STO's biggest project after the expansion of its fuel storage facility. We're working to commence this project within this year."
STO stated that the new wharf could accommodate freighters of 25,000 - 30,000 tonnes, while the warehouse would be constructed on a land plot of 250,000 square feet.
The official further stated that aggregate would be transported in bulk to Gulhifalhu's new harbour, where it would be packaged in sacks and then supplied.
Currently the aggregate imported by STO are unloaded at jetties managed by private firms, in the industrial island of Thilafushi.
