The ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) is confident that there is no candidate in the opposition that could compete with President Abdulla Yameen, and they are looking forward to the upcoming election, parliament’s deputy speaker and Hulhu-Henveiru MP Moosa Manik claimed on Sunday.

Speaking to the press at a PPM party hub in capital Male, MP Manik also noted how the opposition has not yet revealed its presidential candidate. Many of PPM's leaders have continued to note the opposition's delay in revealing its candidate as the elections draw nearer.

Therefore, there it implies that there is no candidate that can “challenge” the president as of now, he had said.

“We know the politicians in the opposition. And there won’t be anyone who can compete with [the President] in the election – so we’re pretty happy,” MP Manik said.

Taking a jab at the opposition leaders, he said that Maldivians know very well the “background” of these politicians. However, he added that PPM’s campaign strategy would not involve slandering them publicly.

The former chairperson of main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) had claimed that the ruling party’s re-election bid for the presidential election slated for September is getting stronger.

MP Manik said that they would be able to win the popular vote and elect President Yameen for a second term by showing the public the triumphs of his administration.

He further said that, if PPM were not able to come to a decision on a presidential candidate, the party would still carry out its campaign for the election.

He noted how PPM’s campaign office had deployed teams to islands across Maldives in the month of Ramadan to extend their outreach and garner support for the president.

PPM campaign teams are set to visit five atolls before the end of Ramadan.

At the press conference, ruling party’s coalition partner Maldives Development Alliance’s (MDA) deputy leader and Kendhikolhudhoo MP Ali Mauroof had assured that this year’s presidential election would be free and fair, and that everyone who fits the requirement according to Maldives’ Constitution would be allowed to compete.te
