Health Protection Agency (HPA) on Wednesday announced that 1,216 tested positive for COVID-19.
HPA has been working to clear a backlog of samples collected, and as such, out of the samples that tested positive today, only 836 cases were positive from those collected within the past 24 hours.
This increased the confirmed COVID cases in the country to a total of 41,308.
Meanwhile, 305 people made full recoveries, bringing the total figure to 27,428 to date.
HPA revealed that of the new cases, 1,013 were from the greater Male’ region while 201 cases were from residential islands, one case from an operational resort and one case from an operational resort.
Maldives is currently in its worst COVID wave still date. The fatality rate has increased rapidly. Although only a few days into May, Maldives has seen 16 fatalities within the month already. The most recorded fatalities previously were in February of this year, with 10 deaths.
Currently, there are 13,784 active cases in the country.
To curb the rapid spread of COVID-19 in Maldives, HPA has strengthened the restrictive measures. This includes increasing curfew hours and extending the curfew duration as well.
On March 12, 2020, WHO classified the spread of COVID-19 as a global pandemic. To date, the new strain of novel coronavirus has infected over 161.8 million people and claimed over 3.35 million lives around the world. However, out of those infected, more than 140 million people have recovered.
