A tornado wreaked havoc on the island of Fonadhoo, Laamu Atoll, during the early hours of Saturday, rendering six houses inhospitable.
National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA)'s Director General Sofeenaz Hassan revealed that a total of 12 houses were damaged in the incident.
Following the aftermath, several houses were missing roofs and had collapsed walls.
Moreover, islanders stated that additional damages were caused by uprooted trees that fell on the residences.
Providing further details, Sofeenaz stated that inhabitants of the six houses have acquired temporary shelter in other households on the island.
According to NDMA's Deputy CEO Umar Fikry, a house in Hithadhoo, Laamu Atoll, was also unroofed. The household has been provided assistance by the authority.
NDMA is currently assessing the damages incurred.
No injuries were reported in the disaster.
