Parents of students at Laamu Atoll Dhanbidhoo School have been protesting for three days, demanding to change the school's principal.

The parents gathered at the school premises last Tuesday and interrupted lessons, closing down the school and commencing their demonstrations.

The protests are being held due to their disapproval of the school's decision to commence classes for this term before having acquired the necessary teachers, as well as the rundown conditions of the classrooms themselves.

Vice President of the island's council Hussain Fazeel said that the school had temporarily transferred a teacher from Ihahdhoo school yesterday.

"That teacher was brought to teach two subjects (Economics and Business) temporarily. The Ministry has said that we will get a permanent teacher by Saturday. But now they are protesting to have the Principal dismissed," Fazeel said.

He said that the reason for this is that despite it having being included in the budget for the past three years, repairing and maintenance of the school is yet to be undertaken.

"Now the parents' demand is for the Principal to resign. That's because nothing improved while he was serving as Principal, and things just kept going from bad to worse," he said.

Fazeel also noted the rundown state of the school building.

Dhanbidhoo School's Principal also hails from the same island. He has been serving in his position for six years.

In 2023, parents of the school submitted a petition seeking the dismissal of the Principal. Fazeel said that those efforts had been in vain.

However, speaking to Mihaaru News, the Principal of the school claims that there are adequate teachers at the school. He refused to comment on the concerns raised by the parents.
