Drug peddler arrested with half kilos of illicit narcotic substances, has received reduced sentence owing to confession.
The convict was initially sentenced with life imprisonment, following which they had agreed with the prosecution with a confession. Following the convict's confession, their sentence has been reduced to 12 years.
Lowest sentence for drug trafficking in accordance to Maldives Penal Code, is life imprisonment with a fine of MVR 100,000.
The convict, identified as Adam Samooh, was arrested during a 2020 drug bust. Authorities had discovered narcotic substances in his possession upon inspection.
State prosecution agreed to lower Samooh's term following a confession, which was upheld at the Criminal Court of Maldives.
Criminal Court sentenced Samooh for a jail term of 12 years and six months. After deducting Samooh's remand of one year and 11 months, the convict will have to serve 10 years of jail time.
Despite receiving a lenient jail term, court had not reduced the fine, which the convict is still subjected to pay.
