Maldives Police Service, on Tuesday, confirmed that it had commenced an investigation to determine any possible negligence concerning the movement of the infected Italian tourist that holidayed in Kuredu Island Resort and transited in the capital city of Male' for two days before departing from Maldives.
Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem ordered the police to launch an investigation into the initial spread of the virus in Maldives on Monday.
A police spokesperson stated that adequate safety measures were not implemented in time due to the actions of individuals who were aware, but failed to inform authorities that the Italian tourist exhibited symptoms of COVID-19. The police spokesperson stated that the investigation would conclude whether these individuals were negligent in failing to inform authorities about the case.
Although the Italian tourist informed Maldivian authorities after testing positive for the virus following his return to Italy, Kuredu Island Resort and Spa only notified the government when the resort's doctor began displaying symptoms.
The first confirmed cases of the virus were reported from Kuredu Island Resort on Saturday. Two additional individuals on the resort tested positive on Monday. Currently, the total number of confirmed cases has reached eight, including two cases reported from Sandies Bathala resort and two more individuals tested positive in Kuramathi Island Resort and Spa.
The three aforementioned resorts are currently under lockdown.
The government has also quarantined 16 people in Male' after they came into contact with the infected Italian tourist during the two days the individual transited in Male'.
