COVID-19: Kulhudhuffushi lockdown extended by seven days

The COVID-19 taskforce established in Kulhudhuffushi, Haa Dhaalu Atoll decided to extend lockdown measures on the island by a seven day period on Thursday.

However, the task force lightened several aspects of the measures which will remain in place until 1200 hrs on May 7.

Kulhudhuffushi City Council stated that citizens would now be allowed to leave their homes for essential purposes between 0600 and 1500 hrs everyday.

The council also stated that the Health Protection Agency (HPA) had granted it the authority to impose fines beween MVR 500 and 5,000 on individuals violating regulations.

HPA initially placed Kulhudhuffushi under lockdown on April 21 and extended until May 1.

Malé, one of the most densely populated cities in the world, has recorded a significant increase in COVID-19 since recording its first local transmission on April 15.

On Thursday, authorities confirmed 116 new cases—the highest number of positive confirmations reported within a single day.

In addition to the capital, COVID-19 cases have been confirmed in Uligan in Haa Alif Atoll, Narudhoo and Milandhoo in Shaviyani Atoll, and Thulusdhoo in Kaafu Atoll.

Overall, Maldives records 396 confirmed, 378 active cases of COVID-19, with a total of 17 recoveries. The country recorded its first virus death, an 83-year-old local female, on Wednesday evening.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified the spread of COVID-19 as a global pandemic. The new strain of novel coronavirus has infected over 3.2 million people and claimed over 228,600 lives around the world. However, out of those infected, more than a million people have recovered.
