A man seriously injured in an explosion in Haa Dhaalu atoll Kulhudhuffushi Airport is set to be transported to India for treatment.
Four people were injured on Thursday when a cylinder used in fire training at the airport exploded while it was being filled. One of the seriously injured, was brought to Malé on the same evening for further medical treatment.
A source close to the family stated that the father of three sustained severe damage to his right hand. The man "doesn't have [anything]" between the arm and the elbow, but the muscles and nerves were not damaged, allowing for some movement in the hand.
He underwent another surgery at ADK Hospital for the damage. The operation involved placing a bolt, as he is being sent to India, and also to prevent potential infection at the site that was previously operated on.
However, the family said a bolt was not inserted this time.
“Generally, he is stable. We will know later today when he will be leaving. We think he will be able to depart tomorrow or the day after,” they said.
The family said that that the heads and staff of Regional Airports have been assisting them in all aspects of treatment since the time of the incident. Additionally, two employees of the company have decided to accompany him to India to arrange all the necessary treatment, along with the family, they said.
