Minister Thoriq expressed the importance of Maldives attending international meetings, conferences and summits to achieve its goals.
Maldives' goals for participating in international meetings are being achieved and the country is at a very advanced level compared to other small island nations, said Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim today.
Speaking at the press conference held at the President's Office today, Minister Thoriq answered a member of the press and said that Maldives has made significant progress compared to all small island nations even in the field of renewable energy alone.
"If the field of renewable energy, Maldives , if you look at the SIDS countries [Small Island Developing States], we have achieved [success] we should celebrate, and we're in a good place. The President has also promised to achieve very important, ambitious pledges in the future," he explained.
"Compared to other small island countries, we are at a very different level, a very advanced level compared to other countries," he further added.
The minister is now preparing for the United Nation (UN)'s General Assembly and its sideline events this month. These include some sideline events organised by Maldives as well.
Minister Thoriq will depart to New York for the event today.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu will also be attending the 79th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 79).
Speaking further at the press conference today, Thoriq said that such international meetings facilitate the financing of environmental projects of the country. The UN SIDS conference held in Antigua last May also facilitated these developments, he said.
For instance, he said, that additional financing required an additional four Mega Watt solar PV system for the 'Magey Solar' project, which started with a total of three Mega Watt solar PV systems aiming to install solar panels in residential houses as per President Muizzu's pledge, was also secured after the conference.
The solar PV systems will be delivered by the end of next month, Thorig said.
“Meetings like the SIDS conference give us the opportunity to further enhance this kind of system,” Thorig said.
Maldives will be hosting the "The summit of the future side event: A vision for an intelligence driven future for Maldives" as a sideline event of the UNGA 79, where President Muizzu is schedule to deliver an address.
It is a pledge of President Muizzu to reduce Maldives' dependence on fuel and ensure 33 percent of Maldives' energy generation is renewable by the year 2028.
