Male' City Council has posted pictures indicating an attempt to break into Mohamed Jameel Mosque last night with the photos displaying a burnt handle owing to attempts to set it on fire.
Male' City Council has stated that some have attempted to set fire to the door handle at Mohamed Jameel Didi Mosque, locally referred to as ‘Fai Fohey Miski’ [Literally meaning 'Feet Wiping Mosque'] located at Lainoofaru Magu in Male' City.
At this time when theft from mosques has escalated once more, the council released photos last night indicating that some people had attempted to set fire to the handle and break in to the mosque.
The pictures shows the plastic handle burnt and blackened from the attempt.
In a post on social media platform X, Male' City Council stated that strict action must be enforced against those who rob and damage property at mosques as well as those who try to damage its sacredness.
The Jameel Didi Mosque which was reopened in May 2019 by a private party also has CCTV cameras installed.
Male' City Council, the institution tasked with managing mosques in Male' has repeatedly expressed concerns on the spiking numbers of theft from mosques.
Twenty one reports of theft from mosques have been lodged to the police thus far this year.
Police said yesterday that the theft of six fans, two phones and a water meter from within these cases have been located and returned to the owners.
