Maldives’ Minister of Foreign Affairs Moosa Zameer has called for the United Nations (UN) and its organisations to prioritize reforming itself.
Minister Zameer made the call while speaking at a meeting of ministers of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in Kampala, Uganda. The meeting was chaired by Ugandan Foreign Minister Odongo Jeje Aboobahir as the group's new Chairman.
Minister Zameer reiterated that the Maldives will always stand for the Palestinian people and will continue to work for an independent state for them.
Zameer said NAM is the hope to fight ideological divisions, geopolitical changes and unprecedented disasters. The minister called upon countries to understand the challenges faced by them in the modern world, to familiarize with them, and to remain steadfast in this work.
He discussed the importance of expanding NAM and made three suggestions. Zameer urged NAM to lead global governance reforms, including reforming key organisations under UN.
The minister stressed on the need to revolutionise the current working practices within the UN and create stronger discussions on other issues beyond cultural issues.
Founded 63 years ago in 1961, the Non-Aligned Movement is a group of 120 countries that do not work together with major powers. The Maldives became a member of NAM in 1976.
