India's External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar has said that Maldives will be a top priority in its Neighbourhood First Policy
During last night's inauguration ceremony of the Hanimaadhoo International Airport project being developed under Indian aid, Jaishankar said, Maldives holds a special place in India's Neighbourhood First Policy.
He said the relationship between India and Maldives is based on cooperation and assistance. He added that India is ready to assist the Maldives in economic and other matters.
"India's assistance will continue in the future," Jaishankar said at the ceremony which was also attended by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
Connecting countries is one of India's top priorities, he said, adding that the Hanimaadhoo Airport project will also connect the world and the northern islands of Maldives. There will also be many economic benefits to the region, he said.
"This project will further strengthen the bond between our people. For that reason, it is our highest priority for which we are very grateful," Jaishankar said.
While many other projects are being implemented under Indian assistance, Jaishankar said India would do everything possible to expedite the completion of the bridge between Thilafushi and Malé, which is being developed under Indian assistance.
