Criminal Court, on Thursday, added seven days to the remand period of the bus driver who that ran over a Ukranian tourist in reclaimed suburb Hulhumale' earlier this week.
The driver, who reportedly fell asleep at the wheel, inadvertently ran over the 31-year-old woman near the newly opened local market at 0630 hours on May 6. Although no other passengers sustained any injuries, the woman died upon impact. Her body has now been handed over to her family.
The Criminal Court initially remanded the bus driver, an employee of state-owned Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) for three days.
MTCC is assisting the victim's with the arrangements for their stay and to transport her body back to Ukraine. The family is currently working to gain clearance from the Ukranian Embassy in New Delhi to transport the body.
