President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom departed on an official visit to the islands of Thulusdhoo, Maafushi and Guraidhoo in capital Kaafu Atoll early Sunday.

According to the President's Office, President Yameen will inaugurate the new harbour of Thulusdhoo, participate in a ceremony held to mark the completion of Maafushi's beach protection project, and finally inaugurate Guraidhoo's clean drinking water services on this trip.

The President's Office's spokesperson Ibrahim Muaz Ali confirmed that the visits were only official trips, and not part of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)'s ongoing presidential campaign to elect Yameen for a second term.

"These are the usual trips for the president to celebrate the completion of infrastructural projects in islands, and to meet their residents and councillors," he said.

President Yameen is scheduled to return to capital Male City on Sunday evening. The next set of official trips will be to Shaviyani Atoll, though the President's Office did not disclose a date.

Meanwhile, PPM has commenced activities to reelect President Yameen in the election slated for September 24. Under the campaign name of "Raees [President] Yameen 2018", cabinet ministers and government-aligned parliamentarians are carrying out door-to-door promotional activities, while the opposition alliance has yet to announce a candidate.

The four-party joint opposition had earlier declared that it would nominate a single candidate to beat President Yameen in the election this year. However, the coalition has yet to finalise a candidate, to increasing criticism from the public.
