A youth died in the island of Thulusdhoo in Kaafu atoll on Saturday evening while playing football.
According to witnesses, Hussein Mahin, 25, had had a coughing fit while out on the field and sat down before keeling over. Some people said that he had been chewing areca nuts while playing.
“The players realised he had a coughing fit. But they rushed over when he didn’t get up after sitting down and fell over. When they reached him, he was already foaming at the mouth,” said a resident of Thulusdhoo.
He was rushed to the island’s health centre on a motorbike around 6:00 p.m. Saturday. He was pronounced dead on arrival.
Mahin’s funeral was held at 11:30 p.m. Saturday night.
