President's Office (PO) requested Ministry of National Planning and Infrastructure to look into leasing an additional 75 land plots from the island of Thulusdhoo, Kaafu Atoll.

In a letter sent to the ministry this Monday, PO's Policy Secretary Aminath Shauna highlighted that the 75 plots of land allocated for Thulusdhoo's residents fell drastically short of the 453 individuals that have applied for them. Hence, the PO directed the planning ministry to look into leasing 75 more plots if possible, as per the request of Thulusdhoo Island Council.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih also vowed, during his visit to the Coral Festival held at Thulusdhoo last week, that he would look into facilitating the leasing of more plots for the island's residents.

According to the island council's President Ahmed Anees, total 125 land plots were opened for lease in November 2019, of which 50 were allocated for the people from Maafilaafushi, Lhaviyani Atoll, who were transferred to Thulusdhoo.

However, Anees claimed that a number of Maafilaafushi recipients already have residences in capital Male'. He added that separate land plots were also leased to husband and wife within one family, which did not apply to the Thulusdhoo applicants.

The plots are being leased from within the island and its newly reclaimed area, with 50 plots to be leased from the latter.

Previously, land plots were leased from Thulusdhoo in 2011.
