Mihaaru Awards hosts colourful 'Sports Stars Fiesta' in Thulusdhoo

Mihaaru Awards on Saturday, hosted a special children's evening at the football grounds in Thulusdhoo, Kaafu Atoll.

The prestigious sports awards, launched by local media Mihaaru, held the aptly named 'Sports Stars Fiesta' under its corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme.

The fiesta provided an opportunity for renowned sportspeople and sponsors of Mihaaru Awards to mingle and enjoy fun activities with the children of Thulusdhoo.

The 'stars' were warmly welcomed by students, teachers and other natives of the island. The students then escorted the guests to the event site, with many displays of cultural performances en route and at the site, including dances and a performance by Maldivian Idol runnerup Shalabee Ibrahim.

The fiesta featured a range of stalls prepared for children, where they could enjoy various activities like face-painting and sports.

The festivities were joined by renowned athletes and coaches who had been awarded Mihaaru Awards in the past, such as swimmer Azka Adil and badminton twin stars Aminath Nabeeha, Fathimath Nabaaha and Aminath Shahurunaz.

In addition to the kids evening, the event was held to provide assistance to the education centre and other organizations on the island.

Telecom giant Ooredoo Maldives announced its decision to conduct a digital literacy programme for the island. The project aims to help young students and the elderly to be more accustomed and familiar in modern technologies.

Veligaa Hardware donated an MVR 5,000 gift voucher to the Kaafu Atoll Education Centre, while Print Lab and B.H.M Traders each donated a single laptop to the centre.

Moreover, Sonee Sports donated two pairs of jerseys to 'Zuvaanunge Rooh', a social-cultural entertainment club on the island in addition to a pair of jersey donated to the education centre, while Mihaaru donated sports equipment to the education centre as well.

According to local media Mihaaru, a large amount of support was provided by the education centre, the island council, the 'Zuvaanunge Roohu' organization, and the 'Multi Youth Association of Thulusdhoo'.

The new Mihaaru Awards will present accolades for 24 categories, thus making it the largest sports awards in the Maldives. These awards include best football player, most promising football player, Golden Boot for top scorer in football, best volleyball player, most promising volleyball player, best coach and referee, and the Mohamed Zahir Naseer award for Lifetime Achievement.

The sports categories of the Mihaaru Awards include football, volleyball and individual sports such as athletics, table tennis, swimming and badminton.

Mihaaru Awards is sponsored by Ooredoo Maldives and leading insurance company Allied Insurance.
