President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Monday vowed to transform the health center in Kaafu atoll Maafushi into a hospital.

The president said this while speaking at the rally held in Maafushi as part of the Guraidhoo by-election campaign for the vacant parliament seat of the constituency.

President Solih said that the health center catered few services when he took office and added that under the current administration, the quality and services of the center have improved.

"The people of this island, tourists, and inmates need a better facility for their medical needs," Solih said.

He said that the Ministry of National Planning, Housing, and Infrastructure and the Ministry of Finance have already been tasked with allocating budget to develop an operation theatre under efforts to transform the center into a hospital.

Besides the hospital development plan, President Solih also spoke about harbour expansion and water and sewerage projects on the island. He also announced the construction of a bridge between the Maafushi mainland and the newly reclaimed area, as well as facilitating vehicle licence issuance services on the island.

Speaking at the rally, President Solih said that the administration has fulfilled its pledges for three islands under the Guraidhoo constituency, which includes Maafushi, and that all of its pledges will be fulfilled before the end of the presidential term.

The Guraidhoo by-election is scheduled for April 15, 2023, with the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), the main opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), and the Maldives National Party (MNP) contending for the seat.
