Local Government Authority (LGA) has announced its decision that the suspension of payments to Councillors implemented during former President Abdulla Yameen’s government will be lifted.

While measures were taken by the previous government against 79 Councillors that served in Councils, a majority of those Councillors were suspended without pay for a long duration of time. However, LGA had annulled the suspension of one Councillor during Yameen's tenure.

LGA has decided to cancel the suspension of 77 Councillors and reduce one Councillor’s duration of the suspension from three months to a month.

LGA’s president and Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla, had decided to revoke the actions taken against the suspended Councillors.

LGA has also stated that the authority would collaborate with the Ministry of Finance in order to give the necessary pay and benefits. which were withheld from the Councillors during their suspension.

It is one of the pledges of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s government to empower Councillors and strengthen the decentralisation system.
