Man caught tying to smuggle phones into prison

A man has been arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle in mobile phones into Asseyri Prison in Kaafu atoll Hinmmafushi island.

According to a statement on Maldives Police Service's website, the 30-year-old man was arrested on January 24. The magistrate court in Huraa island of the same atoll has added 15 days to his remand.

The man was found with nine handsets, 12 headphones, seven chargers and other related gadgets. He was caught after Asseyri Prison employees and police carried out a joint operation.

According to the website, the man had thrown the bag with the phone and other gadgets towards the sea and tried to escape when the prison employees had found him.

The police are carrying out further investigation regarding this.
