Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) announced that it will procure 2 million bin liners to sell at affordable prices.

The corporation revealed its decision to address the issue of rising prices of plastic bags following the amendment to the Waste Management act. Many have criticized the move as they were required to pay the fee for each bag bought for garbage disposal.

WAMCO will purchase the bags from Leesa Maldives, the only local company producing plastic bags and bin liners.

The Managing Director at WAMCO, Yoosuf Siraj said the corporation will commission the production of 2 million bags for its use, and additional bags will be required in the future. The bin liners will soon be available to purchase from retail outlets, according to Siraj.

Customers can purchase the bin liners from the front office of WAMCO’s main building and from the customer front offices of their waste transfer stations in Malé, Vilimalé, and Hulhumalé.

The state began levying a fee of MVR 2.00 on plastic bags under the Waste Management Act on Tuesday last week.

However, the act specifies that the plastic bag fees will not be charged on bin liners sold by waste management companies. The act also exempts bags used for packing fresh and raw fish or fish products, and bags issued from duty-free shops.

WAMCO will sell green and black garbage disposal bags in three sizes; 11 x 17, 18 x 27, and 36 x 48-inch bags. The corporation advises customers to pack perishables and other biodegradables in green bin liners and use the black bin liners for other waste materials.
