This marks the first time in the last 14 years that the MDP has won a parliamentary seat in the constituency, which includes the islands of Guraidhoo, Maafushi, and Gulhi.

The seat had been held by the Progressive Party of the Maldives for the past three terms, with Ibrahim Riza as the representative. The seat became vacant after he passed away last February.
