Four candidates have applied to run in the primary election held by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to decide their candidate for the by-election of the vacant Guraidhoo seat in the parliament.

According to the party, the people who applied for the position are: Mohamed Musthafa and Salman Rasheed from Kaafu atoll Maafushi, and Ibrahim Shaaz and Abdulla Saeed from Kaafu atoll Guraidhoo.

MDP will be holding the primary on March 11. The party's ticket for the by-election will be awarded to whoever wins the primary election.

The Guraidhoo seat fell vacant after Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) MP Ibrahim Riza, who had held the seat for the past 14 years, passed away on February 22 due to cancer.

So far, candidates from the MDP, Maldives National Party (MNP), and Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) have decided to contest for the seat.

The by-election is scheduled to be held on April 15.
