Smart meters will help economize electricity usage, Fenaka Corporation Managing Director Muaz Mohamed Rasheed said yesterday.

Speaking at a ceremony held in Dhaalu atoll Kudahuvadhoo to mark the completion of the smart meter installation project on the island, Muaz addressed public concerns about rising electricity bills at the end of each month.

"The main objective of this project is to address complaints," Muaz said.

He said that while the amount of electricity billed and consumed is currently only known when the monthly bill is received, smart meters will enable users to monitor and manage their daily electricity consumption.

"Now, everyone can track their electricity usage via their phones. These meters can also help identify why electricity consumption spikes on certain days. Complaints about high electricity bills are a daily occurrence on social media, which is very concerning," he said.

Muaz expressed confidence that once the project is implemented nationwide, it will significantly reduce electricity bills.

He also acknowledged that the installation of smart meters was a project initiated by the previous government. Although the previous management of Fenaka Corporation had started several initiatives, significant delays have occurred, he added.

Muaz added that Fenaka Corporation aims to extend the smart meter technology to water meters provided the company on various islands as well.
