The Criminal Court is being temporarily relocated to the former Covid-19 treatment facility in Hulhumalé.

An official from the Department of Judicial Administration (DJA) told Mihaaru News on Monday that the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) handed over the facility to the court last Thursday. Currently, they are working on moving items from the old court building located in Malé to the facility in Hulhumalé.

The Criminal Court is currently located behind the Local Market in Malé, in the old, four-story State Trading Organisation (STO) office building.

Due to the dilapidated state of the building, the court has temporarily stopped its work for the safety of its employees. Some hearings had to be cancelled as well due to the rundown state of the courtrooms.

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) had earlier gotten experts to do an inspection of the building. They concluded that the building was not safe for people to occupy, JSC said.

Therefore, the Criminal Court has formally announced that, out of the two buildings in that location that it operates in, it will discontinue the use of the old four-story building.

The Criminal Court previously operated in the Justice Building in Malé. It was relocated to the old STO building in 2015.
