Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s former Chairperson Ali Waheed, who recently joined Jumhooree Party (JP), is running for the party's presidency.
Ali Waheed, who is in self exile abroad, sent a letter to the secretary general of JP, Ahmed Sameer, in which he revealed his decision to run for the party's presidency. Waheed declared that he plans to take Jumhooree Party to new heights.
Currently Ali Waheed is an adviser to the current JP leader and founder, Qasim Ibrahim.
While JP is the third party he is joining, he kicked off his political career beside former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom in Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP).
Afterwards he had moved onto MDP, where he took up the role of the party's chairperson.
Ali Waheed had been a leading member of both MDP and DRP.
In the upcoming congress of JP, several important changes will be brought to the running of the party. In addition to this, voting for important party posts such as the president and vice president will take place during the congress.
