Jumhoory Party (JP) has revealed that over 400 members will take part in the party congress slated for June 21 and 22.
At a meeting held at the main JP hub, the party's Secretary General Ahmed Sameer stated that members will compete in elections for over 30 party posts during the congress at Paradise Island Resort.
Sameer stated that the top JP posts open for elections are the posts of party leader, party president, vice president, four deputy leaders, youth league and women's league leader, deputy leader, secretary and two members. He added that 15 members will run for the top posts in the secret ballot election.
Jumhoory Party’s national steering committee has also passed the motion to amend the party charter during the party congress to hold primary elections in order to nominate the party’s presidential candidate. The secretary general further added that JP’s new flag and logo will be sent for approval at the upcoming party’s congress.
The current JP charter states that the leader of the party is by default the presidential candidate. Therefore, party leader Qasim Ibrahim is the only eligible candidate for the presidential elections according to the party charter.
However, the Constitution renders Qasim Ibrahim ineligible to compete in the presidential elections as he is over the age of 65 and is currently serving a jail sentence of three years.
