The Jumhooree Party elected five new deputy leaders last night, including Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Aishath Nahula.

Twelve members of the party's leadership nominated themselves for the post of deputy leader at the party's National Conference, which began last Friday. They include some senior government officials and former members of Parliament.

Minister Nahula was the only person directly involved in the incumbent government who was elected as a deputy leader of the party.

JP Deputy Leaders elected:

1. Transport Minister Aishath Nahula

2. Former Transport Minister and former JP Vice President Ameen Ibrahim

3. Former Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Member of Parliament Ali Shah

4. Former Deputy Secretary General of PPM Iqbal Adam

5. Former JP Vice President Ahmed Saud

Most of the five members, except Shah, are very close to Qasim or are his family members. Saud is a relative of Qasim; Iqbal was his personal secretary and is still close to him; and Ameen is at the top of Qasim's list of most trusted people.

From the 741 people registered to vote in the deputy leader's election, 680 of them had cast their ballots. Minister Nahula received the most votes.

The JP National Congress also passed a resolution yesterday recommending the party nominate a presidential candidate or form a coalition led by the party. However, it is not a resolution that must be implemented according to the party's regulations.
