Jumeirah Vittaveli will be marking the second anniversary of its eco-friendly open-air ice rink, with an ice skating masterclass by four-time Olympic medalist Evgeni Plushenko.
The masterclass is held exclusively for the resort's guests on a complimentary basis and is scheduled to take place between March 18 and March 28. Jumeirah will announce the exact date to in-house guests.
In addition to bagging four Olympic medals, Plushenko is a three-time World champion, a seven-time European champion, a four-time Grand Prix Final champion and a ten-time Russian national champion.
Plushenko performed at the inauguration of the ice rink in 2018 and returned to mark the first anniversary, gifting the resort one of his costumes and a pair of skates worn during his gold medal winning performance at the 2014 Olympics.
During the first anniversary celebrations, he also conducted a kid's class for young resort guests and played a game of ice hockey with his son Aleksey.
Vice President of Boutique Resorts at Jumeirah Hotels and Resorts Amit Majumder stated that “I can’t thank Evgeni enough for his support of our ice skating endeavour in one of the most unlikely countries for such a sport – the tropical island nation of the Maldives".
"When I first spoke with Evgeni in 2017 about our plan to build an ice rink on the beach, he instantly expressed his interest to be involved. Since 2018, he has visited Jumeirah Vittaveli every year to perform on the ice rink for our guests, showcasing a rare art that continues to leave guests breathless when they see him swirl and dance across the ice”.
The 87 square-metre surface of 'Ice Ice Maybe' is made from Glice, a sustainable artificial alternative for real ice which eliminates the need for energy to keep the area cool.
