Aishath Rizna, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Assistant Resident Representative, was appointed as the new Chief Judicial Administrator (CJA) on Sunday.

Rizna had formerly served as the registrar at the Civil Court and assistant registrar at the Supreme Court of Maldives.

Her appointment comes under the amendment made to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) Act last year, which transferred jurisdiction over the Department of Judicial Administration (DJA) from the Supreme Court to JSC.

Under the amendment, the then-DJA was abolished and a new one formed under JSC, thus terminating the position of the former CJA, Dr Abdulla Nazeer.

However, the amendment stipulated Dr Nazeer to serve in his position, which he began on November 28, 2018, until the new CJA's appointment.

The Chief Judicial Administrator is appointed for a period of five years, with a monthly remuneration of over MVR 47,000 including salary and allowances.

The amendment to the JSC Act further appoints the Chief Judicial Administrator as head of the Judicial Academy.
