The High Court on Sunday, cancelled former vice-president Ahmed Adeeb's hearing.

No further details were shared.

According to the Department of Judicial Administration (DJA), courts have been ordered to halt unnecessary activities outside of working hours.

In September 2019, the Prosecutor General's (PG) Office pressed charges against ex-VP Adeeb on seven different counts concerning the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) scandal that cost the state over MVR 3.3 billion in embezzled funds.

In the largest corruption scandal in Maldivian history, Adeeb is accused of leasing out islands and lagoons for tourism purposes and transferring the resulting funds to a company owned by his associates under the name of SOF Pvt Ltd.

Initially sentenced to 33 years in jail over his involvement in the MMPRC graft and for orchestrating an assassination attempt on former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, Adeeb's charges were later dropped following the change of administration in November 2019.

However, the state submitted an appeal regarding the High Court's decision to overturn Adeeb's eight-year prison sentence over the embezzlement of USD 5 million owed as acquisition costs for Maabinhuraa, Lhaviyani Atoll.

Previously, Adeeb attempted to flee aboard 'Virgo 9', a Singapore-flagged tug boat, posing as a crew-member in July 2019. Indian authorities intercepted the former vice president near the coast of Tuticorin Port, Thoothukudi, and was extradited in August.

The former vice president was sentenced to three months and 18 days of imprisonment for obstruction of justice after failing to adhere to the travel ban imposed by the Supreme Court.
