Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, on Thursday, was convicted on charges of money laundering.
Criminal Court Judge Ali Rasheed stated that the decision was unanimously reached by five-member judge bench.
In addition to Judge Ali Rasheed, Judges Ahmed Shakeel, Ali Adam, Hussain Faiz and Mohamed Sameer are on the bench.
During the hearing, state prosecutors proposed a five-year prison sentence and a fine that does not exceed five times the amount of money that was laundered.
Yameen's lawyer Ali Shah requested the court to deliver the verdict at another hearing, in order to allow a time period for the bail and appeal process.
Additionally, in the event that any fines are implemented, Shah requested the amount to be withdrawn from the USD 1 million in Yameen's escrow account.
Following this, the court session was adjourned for judges to deliberate on a final punishment for the former president.
