Judicial Service Commission (JSC) said on Thursday that they offered High Court’s Judge Ahmed Shakeel the opportunity to retire in consideration of his current health condition.
In March, Shakeel was appointed as a High Court Judge during his tenure as the Chief Justice of the Criminal Court. However, later when he applied to retire as a judge, the JSC decided yesterday to allow him to do so.
In a statement released by JSC, they said the decision to allow Justice Shakeel to retire was taken after taking into consideration the advice given by the doctors regarding a cardiac condition that he suffers from. It also noted that Justice Shakeel had served the judiciary for 20 years. JSC said judges have been allowed to retire even previously for health reasons.
Judges can ask for retirement due to health reasons. In the past, some judges have been allowed to retire in the same manner.
Justice Shakeel was the judge to preside over the bribery and money laundering case against former President Abdulla Yameen. In the case, Yameen was found guilty and sentenced to 11 years in prison.
