President's Office said on Thursday that even under the Right to Information Act, the contents of the letter sent by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to the Prime Minister of Mauritius regarding the Chagos issue cannot be disclosed.

Although Maldives had initially been against stating Chagos belongs to Mauritius, they later changed their stand and President Solih addressed a letter to the PM of Mauritius in 2021.

This letter was sent after the geographical dispute between Mauritius and Maldives was filed at the international tribunal. The government has drawn criticism from the public over the issue of the letter.

When Mihaaru News requested the President's Office for the contents of the letter under the Right to Information Act, their Information Officer determined that President Solih had previously disclosed the important information contained in the letter. He further said that it is not the administration's policy to release details of international correspondence between nations, and therefore, the letter will not be made public.

An international tribunal has settled the maritime dispute between Mauritius and Maldives. The tribunal has made the decision to divide the maritime domain between the two countries.
