Telecommunications giant Ooredoo Maldives, on Thursday, launched 'WiFi Calling' for the first time in the archipelago.
The service was launched at Ooredoo Color Run Music Show, in the presence of Minister of Communications, Science and Technology Maleeh Jamal and the Chief Executive of Communication Authority of Maldives Ilyas Ahmed.
"We are proud to introduce WiFi Calling to the Maldives, which enables crystal clear calls even in heavily congested areas. The service is now available for Ooredoo customers at no additional cost", Cheif Executive Officer (CEO) of Ooredoo Maldives Najib Khan stated.
"We continue to invest in the latest technologies that enhance the quality of our services, in order to meet the increasing communication needs of customers."
According to Ooredoo, Voice over Wi-Fi or VoWiFi calls enables users to have a crystal-clear voice experience when connected onto a Wi-Fi network.
The company added that WiFi Calling is a technology which allows users to make or receive calls over a Wi-Fi network, in areas where range is not available and when phone is on flight mode.
Any customer with a handset that supports WiFi calling and has the feature enabled can make these calls if they have an Ooredoo 4G LTE SIM, has the VoLTE service active and is connected to a Wi-Fi network. Customers can activate the service by dialling *928*6*8#.
Currently, only Huawei and iPhones support WiFi Calling. Ooredoo stated that iPhone users will need to have iOS version 13.2 or above installed on the phone, while Huawei users will require the latest Android update as well.
